COMPANY PROFILE

Established in 1991 by founder David Shaw, Street + Garden (S+G) specialises in furniture design for public spaces. In 2016, S+G celebrated 25 years in the industry and proudly continues to design for a diverse range of community spaces.

Locally manufactured, the extensive S+G product collection is built to withstand local conditions. And, supporting the local economy means reduced lead times for clients.

A belief in environmental management ensures all S+G products are designed for longevity and repairability, with an eye toward waste reduction during manufacture. S+G outsources all fabrication to local suppliers and certified manufacturers who strictly adhere to Australian standard ISO:9001 for quality management systems.

The creative drive behind respective designs is unique to each project, resulting in an end product that becomes an integral part of a site's identity.

ROCKHAMPTON RIVERSIDE PRECINCT PROJECT

In collaboration with Urbis, Street + Garden was engaged to develop a number of elements for the Rockhampton Riverside Precinct in central Queensland. The general brief was to

create a sophisticated, elegant and timeless furniture suite that was unique in character yet complementary and sympathetic to the local heritage architecture.

Considerations | The starting point was the selection of a robust and minimal material palette of sheet metal and timber, followed closely by the selection of subtle colour options.

One of the major references for the suite was the dappled shade created by the prominent fig trees onsite. This detail was expressed in a custom pattern that was applied across all of the furniture pieces. Given the hot conditions in the region, these perforations help to minimise the surface area exposed to the sun and allow for increased airflow.

The river is another key feature of the site. Given the extensive flooding that occurred in the city in 2018, the furniture suite design needed to accommodate the possibility of future flooding. The material palette selected is robust enough to withstand this type of severe weather, and the thin profiles and heavily perforated surfaces facilitate efficient water flow and easy maintenance.
