Association Profile

The Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) is the national industry body representing professional horticulturists across Australia and South-East Asia. The AIH encompasses a wide variety of occupations and consulting roles associated with the plant sciences, such as arboriculture, landscape design, production and wholesale nurseries, parks and public gardens, domestic landscape maintenance, research and development, biodiversity and natural resources, education and training and horticultural media.

Institute Mission

The AIH leads the horticulture profession nationally, promoting excellence and environmental responsibility through quality professional development, services and advocacy.

By achieving this mission, the Institute enhances community wellbeing and enjoyment of plants and their cultural environment.

Aims of the Institute

  • To promote and represent horticulturists to government, industry and the public.
  • Maintain a code of ethics for professional horticulturists.
  • Uphold and promote the quality of horticultural services provided by its members.
  • Assist in the development of standards and the establishment of benchmarks for horticultural best practice.
  • Improve the quality and selection of plants.
  • Improve the physical environment through the appropriate selection and use of plants.
  • Enhance biodiversity.
  • Advance horticultural research and development.
  • Assist and promote horticultural education and training.
  • Promote strategic alliances and networking.

AIH Membership

AIH membership is available to trained professionals, students and plant lovers alike. Those with qualifications in horticulture or an allied field, or, in some cases, relevant industry experience can join as either a Registered Horticulturist or Horticulturist. TAFE students receive free membership, and those with a keen interest in plants who are aligned with the ethos of AIH can join as Friends of Horticulture.

Registered Horticulturalist

AIH is the only accrediting body for the national Registered Horticulturist (RH) program, which is internationally recognised.
