STORMWATER HARVESTING FOR SYDNEY

20 Jul 2016

An advanced stormwater harvesting system will be implemented in Green Square, Sydney’s newest development, making these households the first recipients of the City’s recycled water program.

Recycled water for non-potable uses, including toilet flushing, irrigation, laundry and cooling towers will be provided to thousands of residents and workers in the Green Square town centre.

The project will be Australia's biggest residential stormwater harvesting and treatment scheme and the first undertaken by the City to deliver recycled water to households.

The former administration building at the South Sydney Hospital site was recently refurbished and houses the new water recycling plant. The plant will treat enough water from stormwater drainage systems to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools each week.

The recycled water will be monitored by Green Square Water Pty Ltd to ensure it continually meets health and safety requirements.

The project is partly funded by the City and a grant given in May 2011 under the then federal Labor government’s national urban water and desalination plan.

Projects like this cement the development’s green credentials and it’s why we are working to have the town centre formally registered for accreditation as a Green Star Community – this will be a first in Australia for a project of this size.
