STEEL EDGING SYSTEMS FOR DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
10 Feb 2026
In contemporary landscape and outdoor design, steel edging has become a foundational element for creating structure, definition and long-term performance. From crisp garden borders to engineered raised planters, modular steel systems offer designers and builders the flexibility to define spaces, control levels and execute clean architectural lines across projects of any scale.
Beyond aesthetics, steel edging delivers durability and consistency that alternative materials struggle to match. ShapeScaper products are manufactured in Australia using premium BlueScope steel, with a range of gauges designed to suit varied applications. The 2mm gauge serves as a reliable, all-round solution for most residential and commercial landscapes, while the 2.5mm option is available for high-traffic commercial and public-realm applications where additional strength and rigidity are required. Both options are notably thicker than many imported alternatives commonly found through large retailers.
Compared with timber, which deteriorates over time, or plastic systems that can become brittle, modular steel edging offers a long service life with minimal maintenance. Installation is also significantly faster than traditional flat-plate steel systems, reducing labour time without compromising structural integrity.
Ease of installation was a core consideration in the system’s design. ShapeScaper edging requires no specialist tools or on-site welding, with pre-drilled panels allowing for accurate alignment and straightforward assembly. All fixings and components are supplied as part of the system, making it suitable for both first-time installers and experienced contractors working on larger commercial projects.
Safety is addressed through the profile design, with a factory pre-rolled top lip that conceals the anchoring stakes beneath. This removes exposed fixings and sharp edges, reducing the risk of unexpected contact and making the system well suited to public spaces, family gardens and areas where safety is a priority.
Correct anchoring is essential to performance. A minimum of three to four stakes per 2400mm length is recommended, depending on soil conditions and layout. Straight runs, stairs and sandy soils benefit from four stakes, while clay soils and curved installations typically require three. Stake lengths range from 230mm for low profiles up to 1180mm for 590mm edging, ensuring secure fixing across applications. ShapeScaper specifies only high-strength commercial-grade stakes to support long-term stability.
ShapeScaper’s Redor® weathering steel develops a natural protective patina over time, similar to corten steel. This process typically stabilises within 6–18 months, accelerated by regular cycles of exposure to wet and dry conditions. Early-stage leaching can occur during heavy water exposure and should be considered around light or porous surfaces. Where required, steel can be pre-weathered off-site prior to installation.
Redor® planters are suitable for vegetables and herbs with no liners or treatments needed. However, in high-moisture environments, a waterproof liner or internal coating can be a good option to further extend service life.
Lower profiles up to 185mm can be shaped by hand into tight curves on-site, while taller profiles up to 590mm accommodate gentle curves with planning. Custom fabrication is also available for precise, project-specific forms.
From refined residential gardens to complex commercial landscapes, steel edging provides designers and builders with a robust, adaptable system that balances performance, safety and architectural clarity. Quotes can be supplied directly from site plans, ensuring efficiency from concept through to installation.
