WAVESCAPE
07 May 2020
An abandoned and disconnected urban zone along the Honggye Stream in Seoul, South Korea, could soon be revitalised into an undulating landscape surface that provides multipurpose public spaces to connect the stream and the city.
LMTLS proposed the concept for Wavescape with the idea of a ‘social magic carpet’ that connects the different levels of the stream and the city, and will transform the zone.
Waveswcape is an “intensified landscape structure” with a fluid design that generates new urban spaces. It is an extension of a street and park, not a separate freestanding structure, but an active mutation that hovers between architecture and landscape.
The curving surface is varied in order to maximise accessibility and connection generated between the Honggye Stream and the rest of Seoul. This encouraged visitors to explore the structure and spend prolonged time within it.
The waving roof helps to integrate the structure with the natural environment and allows for direct contact with the Stream. The structure will include green spaces, filled with an abundance of flora to reinvigorate the area, that encourages people to sit down in peace or socialise. The location will open up the river for recreation and paths will encourage social walking.
