THE GREEN ROOF MEDIA SPECIALISTS

02 Dec 2015

The Scapeworks Australia team are experts in the green roof industry, creating green spaces in urban areas that support environmental sustainability and develop community interaction.

Scapeworks Australia has long been involved in the development of best-practice within the specialised ‘green roof’ industry in Australia, establishing a reputation for supporting the environmental benefits of this type of infrastructure. Scapeworks' trucks supply and install growing media for new and retrofitted green roofs.

Scapeworks' green roof mix is tested against Specification E3 Low Density Container and Green Roofs from the publication Soils For Landscape Development by Leake and Haege. This green roof mix has achieved a certificate of compliance, in accordance with the requirements in the Leake and Haege publication - the first green roof mix to achieve this result. It is tested independently to Australian Standard 3743, with items from Australian Standard 4419.

Water management is a high priority in Australia and green roofs offer an opportunity to catch and reuse grey water in built up environments. This is but one of the many benefits offered by green roofs.

Green roofs help to create useable green space in urban environments, thereby reducing the urban heat island effect that is all too prevalent in cities. The heat island effect is caused by stored heat that builds up during the day in densely populated areas, due to the use of construction materials that store heat. This heat then radiates from the buildings at night, creating artificial hot spots in the warmer months.

Research indicates that a significant drop in temperature is recorded in areas where some portion of the buildings in urban areas contain green roofs.

Green roofs are also in demand in areas with high density living as they can provide spaces for community interaction. Such spaces can increase the value of high rise buildings by providing additional communal space. Perhaps most importantly, green roofs can also assist in the management of stormwater runoff.

Green roofs function as a filter for stormwater runoff, and are also valuable for reducing the amount of overall runoff. Scapeworks Australia has contributed to significant research into this matter and the performance of growing media best used to support runoff function.
