STADIUM LIGHTS BUZZ NO LONGER
26 Apr 2016
ADLT brings back the light, saving Hume City Council and their sports stadiums from unnecessary energy costs in order to help them fulfill their Greenhouse Action Plan.
As part of their Greenhouse Action Plan 2013-2016, Hume City Council had committed to improving the energy efficiency of all of its buildings and operations. In keeping step with this action plan, the council tendered the upgrade of the existing Metal Halide lighting in the Craigieburn and Broadmeadows Basketball Stadiums to a more efficient and environmentally sustainable alternative.
At the time of tendering the stadiums had a combination of 400W & 250W HID high-bay lights installed which had passed their prime and were underperforming far below the standards required. The effects of aging had caused several lights to buzz continuously due to faulty ballasts, while others had ceased to function altogether.
Advanced Lighting Technologies faced several important challenges in creating a solution for this tender including:
- Designing to existing lighting positions
- Creating a compliant switching arrangement for each lighting state based on original electrical layout
- Achieving 2 AS2560 compliant lighting levels - Training & Competition
- Short lead times
ADLT decided that the best light series for the job would be CXB Series LED High Bay, which delivers up to 24,000 lumens with illumination performance allowing one-for-one replacement of 400W metal halide high-bay lighting. The CXB Series obsoletes the need to continue using energy-wasting and high maintenance fluorescent and HID high-bay fixtures.
Thanks to the uniformity and light levels achieved, the necessary requirements were exceeded while reducing the number of fittings per court to just 18 from 35 (a 50% reduction). The benefits were evident almost immediately with reduced maintenance needed as well as a reduction in energy consumption of 75% per court. The stadiums also benefitted from the CXB series instant strike ability that ensured lights are fully functional from the moment they are switched on.
ADLT received excellent feedback from the Broncos and Hume City Council. They loved the instant strike and light levels, with the improved lighting now giving the impression that the whole space felt larger and more open. The recessed position of the LED's means an excellent shielding angle and minimal glare for the players which was important in addition to the club benefiting from the continued energy savings in the future.
