NIGHTFEST IS HERE
23 Sep 2015
NightFest prepares to illuminate Canberra’s skyline with its annual display of spectacular lighting designs. Join the shine this weekend with thousands of lighting fixtures creating wondrous designs in and over the display gardens of Floriade.
A floating floral sculpture projecting intense beams of light into the night sky will star in this year’s Floriade NightFest, when it throws open the gates to the public tomorrow night.
Returning for its eighth consecutive year, NightFest will take visitors on a journey of discovery for five nights (23-27 September) with spectacular lighting designs delivered by the internationally-renowned lighting specialists, Mandylights.
Mandylights Directors Daniel Mercer and Richard Neville said this year’s strong, simple and elegant lighting was inspired by Floriade’s 2015 theme of Reflection.
“Highlights of this year’s NightFest include over a thousand illuminated purpose-made ‘poppy’ lanterns, the event’s largest-ever sound and light show featuring dozens of searchlights and a beautiful floating water sculpture in the Nerang Pool,” Mr Mercer said.
“Over 75,000 floral LED lights have been hung to make up the stunning Cathedral of Light, and there are plenty of surprises around the park from swooping planes to visual games of Two Up, shimmering stars and nearly a thousand lighting fixtures creating a memorable atmosphere on, over and in the garden beds”.
In addition to the stunning visuals, NightFest will play host to roving performers, bustling night markets and a fantastic line-up of entertainment. Crowds will also be entertained in The Comedy Cave by world-class acts Joel Creasey, Hannah Gadsby, Luke Heggie and Celia Pacquola.
Two new pop-up venues, La Petite Grande and The Little Palais, will offer unique experiences such as a silent disco, UV dance party and intriguing circus acts.
ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said NightFest would deliver something for everyone.
“Nightfest is a great event in the ACT calendar, giving people of all ages the opportunity to enjoy Floriade under lights,” the Chief Minister said.
NightFest opens each evening at 6:30pm and closes at 10:30pm.
