HYDE PARK CAFé UPGRADE

19 Jul 2017

Sydney’s iconic Hyde Park Café upgrade plans reveal the inclusion of improved public amenities, public seating, gardens, and paved areas in one of the busiest hubs of the city.

The major upgrade of Australia’s oldest park continues as the City of Sydney confirms construction of a stunning new open-plan café in Hyde Park South to begin this year. The works will be undertaken alongside the upgrade of Museum Station currently being undertaken by Transport for NSW.

"As part of the agreement between the City and Transport for NSW, we’ve committed to building the café, and we’re thrilled the stunning design is consistent with the heritage setting of Hyde Park and Museum station,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore.

In addition to the upgrade of the nearby transport hub, other major improvements to historic Hyde Park attractions will be completed in a similar time frame. According to the Lord Mayor, the café and station upgrade has “coincided with our major improvement works on the ANZAC War Memorial, Pool of Reflection and the park path network.”

The Hyde Park Cafe upgrade will see the construction of:

  • Two unisex toilets with one accessible to park users
  • Seating for around 90 people
  • A lift lobby with new paving
  • More accessible routes from Museum Station to the Anzac War Memorial
  • New garden beds, retaining walls and stairs
  • Paving in the café and station surrounds

The new café and surrounding public infrastructure will help to enhance the park’s atmosphere and reputation as an “urban oasis … for the 1.2 million people who live, work or visit the city daily.”
