A testament to construction excellence, this project is an undisputed success
Built by Landscape Environs and designed by Outerspace Landscape Architects in conjunction with the City of Onkaparinga Council, the Memorial Garden of Remembrance (next to the RSL) and adjacent public space were created for the people of Port Noarlunga, South Australia.
This was an extensive project comprising civil works, earthworks, stormwater drainage, soft landscape works, construction of retaining walls, and hardscape components including playgrounds, shelter and open space areas. To minimise impact on the surrounding residential properties, Landscape Environs had to carefully stage the construction works.
Designed as an interactive leisure and play space for visitors and the local community, as well as a memorial and remembrance space for the RSL, this site abounds with special features. Just some of these include the feature memorial walls, the relocation of the historic RSL Memorial Gun, feature pavements and lighting, the play equipment and seating areas, all of which are complemented by the sustainable soft landscaping.
The pavements incorporate coloured and honed concrete pathways, segmental paving and feature granulitic paving. These complement the retaining walls, which were built using recycled and imported natural local quarry stone, and the memorial walls, which are of rendered concrete block work.
The project’s planting scheme uses lavenders, roses and rosemary intermixed with hebes for the memorial garden. For the swale and playground spaces, Landscape Environs used a selection of hardy drought-tolerant coastal plants likely to be found locally, such as Carpobrotus rossii, Leucophyta brownii and Isolepis nodosa.
The sub-surface drip-irrigation system to the turf and garden areas was constructed in compliance with local water restrictions.
This detailed project was challenging for all involved. One particular challenge was the need to have the project completed for the Anzac Day memorial service. This required the sourcing of additional workforce and materials. Other challenges included the positioning of the existing services, some of which had to be relocated, and working with many different design levels in the construction of the public space. Thanks to Landscape Environ’s expertise, the end result was satisfying for all concerned.
