CITY OF MORETON BAY LEADS THE WAY WITH URBAN HEART SAFE PARKS
08 Oct 2025
Every day, thousands of Australians visit local parks, playgrounds, sports courts, city hubs and water parks to play, connect and gather. But what if crisis were to strike – would those places be ready to save a life?
Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of preventable death in Australia. When it strikes, every second matters. Access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can mean the difference between life and loss.
That’s why the nationwide Urban Heart Safe Movement was created. By increasing public access to AEDs in the places where communities play, live and gather, we can save lives when it matters most.
In 2024, City of Moreton Bay became the first Council in Queensland to embrace this life-saving vision by partnering with Urban Play to trail AEDs in nine high-traffic parks. The project not only made AEDs widely available but also assessed potential risks such as vandalism and theft when devices are placed in public spaces.
After a successful 12-week pilot, the City of Moreton Bay is now expanding AED access throughout the region.
“We’ve seen the success of these AEDs and the confidence it brings our community. That’s why we’re now expanding the program across the region." - Mayor Peter Flannery, City of Moreton Bay
Through its partnership with Stryker, Urban Play provides leading AED technology designed for easy public use and effortless for Councils to manage. Its free Fleet Management System offers remote monitoring of device status, battery life and maintenance needs, along with a live dashboard to track AEDs across the region.
Forward-thinking Councils like Moreton Bay are setting the benchmark. With South Australia already mandating AEDs in public places, and other states preparing to follow, now is the time to act.
