Canberra’s new and expanded convention centre will be significantly located at the third point that constitutes the national triangle in the ACT.
In as little as five years, the nation’s capital could be opening its doors to a new and expanded convention centre. The winners of the original competition to design the building, Italian firm Studio Fuksas, will collaborate with home grown Australian firm Guida Moseley Brown Architects to further develop the original design.
The project has been named ‘Australia Forum’ and is quite significantly located. Along with Parliament House and the Ministry of Defence, Australia Forum will stand at the third point that constitutes the national triangle in Canberra, ACT.
There is a conceived unity and fusion in the preliminary designs, between the urban surrounds and the ecological make-up of the site, Lake Burley Griffin not too far away. To this effect there will be a completely transparent and permeable skin surrounding the building.
In terms of the interior and what the building will actually contribute, it is intended to be a very flexible venue comprising of a 3000-seat plenary hall, a large exhibition space, various office and retail spaces and an independent centre for dialogue.
Given the contribution this building has the potential to make, stimulating both the local and international economy, it’s no surprise the Australian Government is keen to get things underway, investigating a number of different ways to see these plans realised, including private-public partnership and financing.
