BENEDICT TAKES ON THE COOKS COVE CHALLENGE
1 April 2009
Benedict takes on the Cooks Cove challenge Benedict has supplied material for the reconstruction of Bicentennial and Scarborough Parks within the $1.7billion Cooks Cove development project in Sydney.
Sydney’s Cooks Cove project is a $1.7billion development that will create an internationally recognised trade and technology zone right next to Sydney Airport.
The Cooks Cove site is enormous and comprises a golf course, marshes, an old landfill site and sports fields. As part of the development, which is approximately 70 per cent recreational space, Benedict has supplied material for the reconstruction of Bicentennial and Scarborough Parks within the Cooks Cove development. The sites had been remediated and clay-capped to contain any contaminants present and a layer of premium-quarried sports field turf underlay was levelled out and turfed.
As the contactor employed by Buildcorp, The Green Horticultural Group had the task of installing a fully automated irrigation system, laser-levelling the imported soil and turfing the combined area of more than 65,000m² for the two sports fields.
More than 15,000 tonnes of Benedict SportsMix was supplied within a very short time period — deliveries of more than 2000 tonnes a day were commonplace over the course of the project. Rainy days made the tight schedule even harder to meet as the sites were not able to take trucks when wet due to the clay sub base capping the site. The bulk supply of Benedict SportsMix was carried out in February 2009.
Benedict SportsMix was chosen for the sites as it is 100 per cent quarried alluvial topsoil, guaranteed contaminant-free, making it a natural option for a remediation site. The material is classed as an alluvial loamy sand and was vigorously tested every 700 tonnes by Sydney Environmental and Soil Laboratory (SESL) to meet the strict requirements of the sites.
Being able to produce and deliver 15,000-plus tonnes of quality-assured and certified material to the Cooks Cove project within such a strict time frame is a task outside of any other supplier’s ability. Benedict is proud to have been involved with the supply of the two sports fields and is now focusing on pending opportunities that are soon to come along for the Cook’s Cove project.
Other recent large sports construction projects completed by Benedict include:
Redfern Park Upgrade
Hills Grammar, Kenthurst — school oval construction
Gipps Road, Greystanes — AFL oval
The Ridge Golf Course, Barden Ridge — first nine holes
