BENEDICT GLASSSAND BECOMES ACCEPTED IN THE MARKET PLACE
1 July 2009
Benedict's GlassSand, a sustainable alternative to natural construction sand, has received acceptance in the market place.
In 2005 Glass Granulates was formed, a joint venture between Benedict Recycling and Visy, that takes in excess of 50,000 tonnes of glass cullet per annum. Currently Glass Granulates has recycling operations in Chipping Norton (NSW), Laverton (VIC) and Auckland, New Zealand.
By developing processes to clean and crush the glass cullet, to produce a free draining, fully sustainable recycled Glass Sand product, Glass Granulates is able to stop huge quantities of waste glass from reaching landfill. To answer that little voice inside you that is thinking, “it must be dangerous to handle as it looks like crushed shards of glass!”, we can assure you that due to the processing techniques employed it does not cut you and looks just like natural sand!
Glass Granulates has developed many sustainable products utilising GlassSand, some of these include Coarse Washed GlassSand for Paving and Drainage applications, High Grade Compaction Sand for Sydney Water and recently Urban Fill, for general filling applications.
Urban Fill has been recently launched by the Benedict Sales Team and has really taken off. Urban fill is a blend of GlassSand and recycled crusher dust, and has been designed for use in under-slab applications and general filling purposes. Being sold into a high volume, low cost market, Urban Fill has been priced to have an economical advantage over recycled crusher dust. It also has the advantage of being able to be compacted very easily with little effort. The material is 100% recycled and sustainable, and is quickly becoming the industry’s material of choice for general filling applications.
The acceptance in the market place for GlassSand products has been hard won, as the term “Glass” tends to invoke all sorts of concerns. Benedict has fought through these barriers by consistently proving that the material is safe to use, and has no more risks associated with it compared to natural silica based sands. In addition, all GlassSand products have been tested and certified to meet the requirements of the Department of Conservation and Climate Change (DECC) Guidelines.
Benedict is proud to be able to offer a sustainable product that offers an environmentally friendly and commercially viable alternative to natural construction sands. With natural resources becoming less available, and a shift in the way we are thinking about the environment, the need for recycled sustainable materials in the market place is greater than ever.
Benedict Sand & Gravel is 100% committed to producing sustainable recycled solutions for the year 2000 and beyond.
