VIBRANT STREETSCAPE UPDATE

A streetscape revision project provides an improved central gathering space for the community to come together.

In partnership with Sunshine Coast Council, The Landscape Construction Company (TLCC) was engaged as the principal contractor for the Cribb Street upgrade in Landsborough, Queensland. Aimed at creating a new space to be used as a community hub, the streetscape redevelopment introduced new pathways, several shelters and a play area featuring custom sculptures.

As the main commercial street in Landsborough, Cribb Street provides important community infrastructure and pedestrian amenity. Improvements to the park space by creating a central gathering zone would only serve to support community events and local business activity. The new community hub now adds character to the area that fits perfectly into the town’s unique identity.

Part of the multistage Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan, the Cribb Street upgrade marks the completion of Stage 2 of the scheme. The completed park improvements add to the works already undertaken, providing even greater amenity and functionality to the main street. Features of the new space include shelters, seating, a playspace, lawn area for community events, shade trees, and creative lighting elements that build on the signature night-time lighting of the township.

The scope of the works completed by TLCC include the installation of the children’s play area, with fencing and rubber softfall to ensure safety. Construction of bricked pavements and concrete footpaths, as well as the installation of large timber architectural elements that add a natural and rustic vibe. The installation of seating and picnic settings also fell under TLCC’s scope of work, as did the supply and install of necessary electrical works and lighting infrastructure to ensure maximum public usage.

A major focal point of the project is the custom steel shade structures. Installed by TLCC, the giant shelters hold perforated steel canopies aloft over the heads of park visitors, providing shade under their unique profiles. Developed by artists, the special geometric ‘pods’ suspended within the arbour are lit up at night to provide feature illumination within the park. “The pods reference the region’s Bunya Nut trees, which were once plentiful in the area, providing food sources and a natural resource to support First Nations gatherings, trade and ceremony,” explains Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Councillor Jenny Broderick.

Extensive softscape works, including shade tree planting using mature trees, rounds out the project and softens the hard edges of the meandering pathways. To keep the greenery thriving, TLCC also installed an extensive irrigation system to the turf and garden areas.

“The Council team has worked with the Landsborough community over several years to develop the design for Cribb Street to beautify and improve the town’s strong community heart,” says Cr Broderick.

“The revitalised streetscape creates a stronger, more functional destination and beautiful town heart for locals to gather, and for visitors to experience our country charm.”
