PORT ADELAIDE FC UNVEILS CONCEPT PLANS FOR MIXED-USE PRECINCT

18 Mar 2026

Port Adelaide Football Club has unveiled concept plans for first-of-its-kind initiative: a mixed-use precinct located around Alberton Oval. The "Alberton Square" proposal, designed by COX Architecture, includes commercial, health and residential components, along with active spaces and community plazas.

The 20,000-square-metre vision for Alberton Square is to deliver a world-class precinct encompassing commercial, health and wellness, community, and residential offerings, directly connected to the elite high-performance and community sport facilities at Alberton Oval.

The project has been in planning for four years, with the club aquiring residential properties since 2023. 26 residential properties between the oval and Port Road have been purchased to make way for the proposal, which incorporates an existing car park already owned by the club. Funding has been provided by private investors and the Australian Football League (AFL).

The project’s working title, Alberton Square, is a fitting homage to the history of the Alberton district. When the area was first masterplanned in the 1870s, the district of Alberton featured five strategically located public squares and parks, of which only two remain today.

Through the initial design of this development, and its emphasis on expanded public and community spaces, the intention is to reinstate one of those historic squares, returning something meaningful to the original fabric of the neighbourhood.

The proposed development is aimed at addressing housing demand in Adelaide’s western suburbs while providing improved facilities and opportunities for the local community.

Port Adelaide Football Club chairman David Koch said, “The concept of Alberton Square is a vision that has been developed to future-proof Port Adelaide for generations to come, underpin our football programs, enhance the local community and the club’s role in it, and ensure Alberton is our home for at least the next 150 years.”

Club CEO Richardson commented, “The vision with this precinct is that there are also lots of active spaces and plaza areas … providing great facilities for the community.”

The club will proceed with a planning application through the state government.
