POLLY PARADE RESERVE
To support the growing community of Tarneit, ACE was engaged by Wyndham City Council on a Design & Construct contract basis to construct a new active open space at Polly Parade Reserve. By installing sports fields and green spaces, the community has access to a greater range of socialisation, sporting and exercise options.
During the design process, the preliminary 3D model was reviewed and ACE identified several opportunities to offer cost optimisation and value adds to Council. The first of which was making adjustments to achieve earthworks balance. This reduced the need to import fill or export excess materials, eliminating associated costs. In the same review process, ACE proposed the removal of a number of retaining walls. This not only assisted in the delivery of the construction phase, but also improved user accessibility and reduced long-term maintenance costs for the client.
Proving that environmental sustainability doesn’t have to increase costs, ACE’s cost-saving proposal to achieve earthworks balance was beneficial to more than just the client’s budget. By re-using 15,000m3 of stockpiled materials to fill future work stages, ACE limited the carbon impacts associated with haulage and the movement of trucks.
Challenges arose in the procurement of specific supplies, as the project called for over 10,000 tonnes of sand rootzone. Supply options were severely limited in the central or western suburbs of Melbourne, with most suppliers located in the south-east. This created delivery delays as trucks had to travel through the city, often slowed by traffic or roadworks. To address this, ACE proposed that we delay the delivery of the rootzone until early January. By returning early from the Christmas shutdown period, our teams were able to take advantage of the reduced traffic volume on the roads. As a result, all imported material was delivered within a 10-day period. By managing project schedules and deliverables effectively, the ACE team was able to reduce the risk of significant time blow outs due to delivery delays.
