FLEXSHADE® UMBRELLAS TRANSFORM POOLSIDE SEATING AREA

A council-managed poolside area at Keilor East has been revitalised by Shade 'n' Sails through the installation of a series of Flexshade® Umbrellas, transforming an exposed and underutilised space into a comfortable, all-weather environment for seating and casual use.

The project brief called for a solution that could provide effective protection from harsh UV exposure, reduce heat, and allow the space to remain usable during wet weather. As the pool is heated and operates year-round, rain protection was an important requirement alongside shade performance. The presence of underground services also placed strict limitations on footing locations, making a minimal-post solution essential.

Shade 'n' Sails selected Flexshade® Umbrellas for the project due to the ability to deliver large spans of coverage with a relatively small number of supports. The modular layout allowed the system to be carefully configured around site constraints, maintaining required clearances to access points and circulation paths while achieving consistent coverage across the seating area.

To maximise performance, multiple umbrella units were linked to create continuous coverage. This required careful detailing to ensure adjoining panels were correctly tensioned, maintaining a clean appearance while preventing gaps and allowing effective water runoff. All steelwork and PVC covers were manufactured in-house by Shade 'n' Sails, enabling close control over fabrication accuracy, fit, and installation sequencing.

The impact of the installation was immediate. Within days of completion, the council reported strong positive feedback from members, with the upgraded space quickly becoming a popular area for gathering and eating. Previously avoided during summer due to reflective heat from surrounding concrete, the space is now consistently occupied.
