DESIGNING GARDENS THAT WITHSTAND EVERYDAY USE

13 Mar 2026

For many councils and specifiers, the dream of a beautiful greenspace is often balanced against a simple reality: upkeep. Add the challenges of the Australian climate - strong sun, dry periods and sudden downpours - and maintaining a public garden can quickly feel like more work than it should.

That's why low-maintenance garden deisgn has become such an important focus in modern landscaping. A well-designed greenspace isn't just about what you plant, it's about how the entire space is structured.

And one of the most overlooked elements in that structure is garden edging.

While it may seem like a small detail, edging plays a surprisingly important role in shaping how a greenspace functions and how it looks over time. Clean, defined edges help create clear boundaries between lawns, garden beds and pathways. Those lines bring order to the space, giving the space a finished, intentional feel.

More importantly, good edging helps prevent many of the small maintenance problems of upkeep. Without clear boundaries, lawns slowly creep into gardenbeds, mulch spills onto paths and soil gradually shifts onto hard landscaping after heavy rain.

With well-designed edging in place, garden beds stay contained, lawns remain tidy and the entire space holds its shape far more effectively. The result is a greenspace that looks neat and well-cared every day.

In Australia, choosing the right material is particularly important. Outdoor products here need to withstand intense UV exposure, fluctuating temperatures and bursts of heavy rain. Materials that require constant repainting, sealing or replacing quickly become liabilities.

This is one reason why steel edging has become increasingly popular in public landscapes. Redcor and Galvabond both offer durability and longevity while creating the crisp lines that designers often rely on to define outdoor spaces.

Steel garden edging in particular provides strength and stability that stands up well to lawn mowers, whipper snippers and everyday public use. With the option of weathering steel available, a protective patina develops over time, creating a warm, earthy tone that blends naturally into planting while protecting the material from further corrosion.

Of course, material is only a small part of the equation. Installation plays an equally important role in ensuring edging performs well over the long term. Working to a design and preparing ground and drainage all contribute to a stable result. When edging is installed correctly from the start, it remains secure and visually clean for years, rather than shifting or sinking after a few seasons.

Ultimately, the goal of good garden edging isn't simply to separate one area from another. It's about giving the greenspace a clear framework, a structure that supports planting while reducing the maintenance tasks that tend to accumulate over time.

These ideas will be further explored at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2026, where ShapeScaper will be presenting a series of morning talks at The Welcome Garden, along with an interactive exhibitor display created in collaboration with the team at Living Senses.

The space has been designed to demonstrate how modular steel edging, rings and planters can help shape a modern garden environment that is both visually striking and practical to maintain. Curving garden beds, defined pathways and sculptural steel forms will show how structure can guide the planting while still allowing the greenspace to feel natural and inviting.

Rather than relying on complex features or constant upkeep, the design focuses on durable materials and thoughtful layout, elements that allow a garden to remain beautiful over time.

Visitors to the display will be able to experience how these system work together in a complete garden setting, offering inspiration to homeowners and landscape professionals alike.

At its core, a low-maintenance garden isn't about simplifying the design or removing personality from a space. It's about building a strong foundation that allows a greenspace to thrive with less ongoing effort.

When the structure of a garden is thoughtfully designed from the beginning, everything else becomes easier. Plants stay where they belong, pathways remain clear, and the entire greenspace continues to look intentional and well cared for.

In the end, the most successful public gardens aren't the ones that demand constant work, they're the ones that quietly support the way people experience the space.
