WHAT A DIFFERENCE A PLANTER MAKES

Precast concrete has been used to bring a fresh new look to an iconic Brisbane building.

Located in the heart of the central business district of Brisbane, Queensland, Riparian Plaza is a 53-storey mixed-used building that, until 2006, stood as the city’s tallest skyscraper. Serving commercial and residential needs, the building is an iconic city landmark.

Designed by architect Harry Seidler and structural engineer company Robert Bird Group, Riparian Plaza, at the time of its construction in 2002, was the last vacant waterfront property in the CBD and the first premium commercial space to be built in over a decade.

With credentials like these, it’s easy to see why this building has a special place in the hearts of Brisbane locals.

Despite its stunning riverside location, in 2021 a refresh of the Plaza’s forecourt was undertaken to add further aesthetic appeal along with pedestrian safety and functionality through the addition of a series of fixed structures.

Experts in architectural precast concrete products, Benzini Precast Concrete was commissioned to undertake the design and supply of a suite of products to complete the upgrade. Boasting a consistent design across the collection, Benzini manufactured and supplied new large-scale signage, bollard planters and a concierge desk at the front of the building.

Showcasing a mix of white terrazzo concrete and bronzed metal, the finned design of the planters created by Benzini offers a three-dimensional look that gives the area an appealing texture. Both hardy and attractive, the planters are staggered across the forecourt edge, providing some much-needed greenery as well as forming a helpful safety barrier for pedestrians.

Retaining the finned, slightly retro style, Benzini also produced a new sign for the front of the building. Long and linear, the solid structure boldly announces Riparian Plaza in large metal letters slotted between the metal plates dividing the concrete block. Situated directly alongside is another precast block that serves as both bollard and directional signage at the front of the plaza.

With its cohesive palette of soft, neutral colours and bold design, these precast elements add a certain pizzazz to a well-respected local icon.
