UP THE CREEC AND SURROUNDED BY NATURE

Designed to inspire children of all ages, this regional playspace delivers one-of-a-kind play challenges with a nature-based theme.

Located in Burpengary, Queensland, the Caboolture River Environmental Educational Centre (CREEC) Adventure Playground has earned accolades for its creative design, environmental sensitivity and commitment to providing a truly immersive learning and play experience. Recognised with the 2024 Queensland Landscaping Commercial Project of the Year award, the playground is a testament to the exceptional work of Glascott Landscape & Civil; a leader in landscape and civil construction for over three decades.

Glascott’s reputation for excellence in the field has been further solidified by this project, underscoring its proficiency in delivering high-quality designs that harmonise with the environment while meeting the complex needs of its clients.

The CREEC Adventure Playground was meticulously designed to integrate play with education, creating an engaging space that celebrates the local flora and fauna. The unique play equipment and carefully crafted landscaping elements are designed to enhance the natural environment. Visitors can learn about the Moreton Bay region’s ecosystem through interactive displays at the Environmental Education Centre, then venture outdoors to explore the sensory garden, utilise the picnic facilities and engage with the playground’s imaginative features.

The playground is divided into several zones to cater to different age groups and abilities, ensuring everyone from toddlers to adults has the opportunity to discover and learn through play. For the youngest adventurers, the sand-play Discover Dig and boulder balancing trails foster physical skill development, while older children can test their agility on rock-climbing paths and climb through rope nets to the Macadamia Nut cubby, which offers panoramic views of the landscape.

The CREEC Adventure Playground stands out not only for its playful elements but also for the complex challenges overcome during its construction. One of the most critical aspects of the project was habitat and ecosystem management. Due to the site’s location, careful consideration was required to ensure the construction did not negatively impact the surrounding natural environment. Glascott worked closely with the Environmental Education Centre and local council to manage construction around the site’s ongoing operations, bringing in materials and coordinating multiple trades while minimising disruption to the daily functions of the centre.

“Ensuring that the construction process didn’t disturb the operations of the Environmental Centre was paramount,” said Peter Cairns, Queensland Manager at Glascott Landscape & Civil. “We carefully coordinated with all stakeholders, adhering to strict environmental guidelines while delivering the project on time and to the highest standards.”

The scope of work was extensive, involving bespoke play equipment installation, tree removal, vegetation clearing and significant earthworks, including drainage and imported fill. Glascott also managed the installation of hydraulic reticulation systems, water play features and shade sails, ensuring the space was both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The CREEC Adventure Playground is a shining example of Glascott’s expertise in sustainable landscape architecture. The project showcases the company’s ability to deliver innovative play solutions while maintaining respect for the natural environment. The bespoke and proprietary play equipment, coupled with the thoughtful design of mounded pathways, discovery trails and sensory gardens, creates a balanced landscape where nature and play complement one another. A diverse selection of native plant life enriches the space, sparking curiosity in visitors and deepening their connection to the local ecosystem.

As a company that works with both government and commercial clients, Glascott Landscape & Civil is proud to have played a role in creating such a high-quality, award-winning project. Their expertise and dedication to excellence in landscape design and construction has helped shape the CREEC Adventure Playground into a top-tier educational and recreational space.
