THE GEOMETRY OF DESIGN

ICC Sydney, Australia’s largest convention and exhibition centre, has come to life with a reinvigorated public domain that includes a new suite of geometric-inspired street furniture.

In 2016, as part of Darling Harbour’s most exciting renewal in 25 years, ICC Sydney was delivered by the NSW Government in partnership with Darling Harbour Live: a collective comprised of Lend Lease, Hostplus, Capella Capital, AEG Ogden and Spotless FM.

The newly opened ICC Sydney is a world-class convention, exhibition and entertainment centre with 40,000sqm of exhibition space. An event deck of 5000sqm, a theatre with a seat capacity of 8000, and a grand ballroom with banqueting space for 2000 people make ICC Sydney the largest convention and exhibition centre in Australia.

At the heart of its very own Sydney harbour waterfront precinct, ICC is set amidst restaurants, retail areas, and a vibrant public domain in Darling Harbour, just a few minute’s walk to Australia's largest CBD and cultural quarters. New pedestrian boulevards connect the waterfront back to Central Station and laneways in order to increase activation at this iconic Sydney destination.

Capable of collectively hosting more than 12,000 delegates and holding large conferences and exhibitions concurrently, ICC Sydney sits at the epicenter of a 20-hectare transformation of Darling Harbour that includes reinvigorated public spaces.

The upgrade of Darling Harbour's public realm and the reconfiguration of Tumbalong Park have provided an additional 3000sqm of greenspace in the precinct, as well as a new adaptable event space capable of hosting up to 11,000 people. Within this realm sits a new suite of bespoke furniture from StraBe Group that greatly contributes to the user experience in the newly redeveloped space.

StraBe Group were contracted to manufacture and install a custom range of urban furniture and tree grates for the Darling Harbour Live project. The vision for the project was to create world class facilities across the entire Darling Harbour precinct, stretching from Cockle Bay to Haymarket and Ultimo, in order to facilitate the successful hosting of a wide range of local, national and international events.

Taking the unique geometry of the architecture of ICC Sydney as design inspiration, StraBe Group created an urban suite of timber and stainless steel. Infrastructure installed across the site included custom timber daybeds, plinth mounted timber slat seats, and stainless steel bike racks. In addition, custom-designed concrete and timber Tangram (geometric puzzle pieces) seats have been placed across the site, providing a link between the public space and the building’s geometric-inspired architecture. Lighting integrated into the design offers additional ‘theatre’ at night.

The new world-class precinct at Darling Harbour will generate $200 million in annual economic benefit for the NSW economy, and provides public space for locals and international visitors that shows Sydney to its greatest advantage.
