CONSIDER COASTAL IMPACT WHEN ADVISING ON ROOF MATERIALS

by Boral Masonry

As builders and specifiers know, not all building products are suitable for every project. Environmental variables are an important consideration when advising clients on materials for their home.

Building products specialist Boral encourages builders, specifiers and architects to help clients building or renovating on or near the coast understand how marine conditions may influence the long term performance and aesthetics of the products they select – in particular, the roofing material.

“Location is one of the most important considerations for a home’s roofing material. As one of the largest surface areas of a home, the roof is particularly vulnerable to its surroundings. For those close to the coast, the impact of marine influences on building materials should be seriously considered,” said Charlie Condo, general manager Boral roofing.

“Coastal homes can be more prone to salt attack, the process by which salt crystals break down the materials used in and around the home.

“Choosing a location-appropriate material can boost the longevity and minimise the maintenance requirements of a roof. Using salt-resistant tiles can help extend the life of a coastal roof and improve its long-term aesthetic,” advised Condo.

“Boral has a wide range of roof tiles, providing designers with the flexibility to choose tiles that suit different styles of home and confidence that the roof will withstand the impact of coastal living,” said Condo.

Available in terracotta and concrete and in a range of profiles and colours, all Boral roof tiles are exposure grade and suitable for salt exposed environments, including severe marine areas.

Once tiles are installed, in most instances, there is little or no maintenance required. Should a section become damaged, there is the added benefit of seamless single tile replacement.
