How Perth Zoo Delivered 200,000L of Plastic-Free Water with Smarter Infrastructure

Perth Zoo has upgraded its hydration infrastructure to provide clean, accessible, and sustainable drinking water for over 700,000 annual visitors. With soaring summer temperatures and long walking paths, ensuring visitors stay hydrated was a key public health priority. At the same time, the Zoo aimed to reduce plastic waste and support its broader sustainability goals.

As part of an $11.9 million integrated water management project, the Zoo installed Aquafil FlexiFountain and Pulse drinking water stations in stages. Five FlexiFountains were initially placed in high-traffic areas, quickly proving their value with strong usage and positive visitor feedback. Later, the stations were refreshed with custom artwork panels, and an Aquafil Pulse unit was added near the BBQ and chill-out zone, combining function with storytelling.

The drinking stations were chosen for their durability, accessibility, and low-maintenance design. Features include universal access for wheelchair and scooter users, child-height bottle fillers, soft-touch buttons, hygienic high-mounted nozzles, external drainage, anti-bacterial spouts, and tough stainless-steel construction. Custom artwork by local students adds an educational and visually engaging element.

Within a short period, the hydration stations delivered over 200,000 litres of water, avoiding approximately 120,000 plastic bottles. Strategic placement ensures all major walking paths have refill points, enhancing visitor comfort while promoting sustainability. The upgrades complement other water-saving initiatives at the Zoo, including efficient taps, dual-flush toilets, and smart irrigation controls.

Perth Zoo’s project demonstrates how thoughtful design, accessibility, and community-focused infrastructure can provide a practical, sustainable, and enjoyable experience for visitors while setting a benchmark for other high-traffic destinations.
