GROUPED CURVED SEATING PROVIDES BENEFITS

St. John Fischer College is located on the north side of Brisbane, in the suburb of Bracken Ridge. As part of a college face lift three courtyard zones required seating for the students. The ideal solution was to enable these zones and seating to influence interaction between the students.

The largest of the three courtyards provided enough space to have a central full circular seat with an inside radius of 1m providing 9.4m of seating space. Surrounding the central seat was two very large continuous curved seats, both having an inside radius of 3.3m and providing 9.7m and 8.4m of seating space each, totalling a massive 27.5m of seating for the whole zone. The capacity and circular/curved style of seating brings students together creating a higher level of college community.

A smaller courtyard zone between the administration and classroom buildings was fitted with a curved seat. This seat had a custom inside radius of 2.3m – 2.1m (within 5 sections) providing a slight elliptical design which provides 10.6m of seating space.

The third zone is situated at the front of the school adjacent to the main entrance, administration building and bus pick-up point. The curved seating here presented an inside radius of 2.0m – 3.8m, and 10.3m of seating space. All seats were custom manufactured by Furphy Foundry using the design from their standard steel slatted range then customised to suite each individual college zone. All the steel was hot dipped galvanised for longevity and corrosion resistance and finished in of Duratec copper metallic kinetic which seamlessly blends peacefully into the college’s new surrounds of Antibes Street and the other at the end of Dixon Street in Mentone, along Beach Road.

The end result of these zones highlights the custom circular/curved seating and shows off the versatile practicality curved seats offer. It has been a wonderful result for all involved but most importantly, the school and students benefit by having such a great place to be proud of and where they can interact with each other like never before.
