BUDD PARK
Just as the Murwillumbah community was recovering from the devastating floods of 2017, record-breaking flooding struck again in 2022. These repeated events had a lasting impact on local infrastructure - and made one thing clear: it’s not a question of if the area will flood again, but when. This reality shaped the design intent for Budd Park, and guided the approach of Ian Bentley, the architect behind the project at Tweed Shire Council.
Budd Park is a picturesque spot in Murwillumbah, a small Northern NSW community of around 9,000 people and a popular stopover for tourists travelling to and from Queensland. The park sits on the banks of the Tweed River, lined with the iconic local tree - the Sweet Gum.
While the upgraded space needed to be welcoming for families, it also had to meet the needs of the town’s growing older population, especially given its proximity to several retirement villages.
That meant the furniture had to be:
- Accessible and DDA-compliant
- Durable enough to withstand future flood event
- Customisable to reflect local identity without adding major cost
- Flexible in seating mounts to suit different design needs
To fit the design vision for Budd Park, GX Outdoors supplied a full range of aluminium furniture and shelters built to withstand future flooding and make cleanup easy. The Citistyle seating options, from platform seats to plinth-mounted park benches, offered the flexibility needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing concrete pillars Ian chose as a key design element.
A standout feature is the laser-cut design in the roof panel of the Red Gum shelter, echoing the Sweet Gum trees that line the park and enhancing the space’s identity.
Meeting the accessibility needs of the whole community was central to the design. The GX Integra Ex Table includes extended tabletops for wheelchair access, while Atessa Bin Enclosures and Citistyle Bike Parking Hoops provide essential amenities every public space requires.
