MUZEIKO FOR KIDS
01 Apr 2016
A children’s museum and science centre has opened in Bulgaria. The first of its kind, the centre aims to teach children about everything from paleontology to space exploration.
Newly opened in Bulgaria, Muzeiko - children’s museum and science centre - is an interactive play and learning space for children set in the capital of Sofia. Designed by New York-based Lee H Skolnick Architecture and Design Partnership, the massive exhibition space is spread between three floors over 3251m2.
Encouraging young minds to explore the mysteries of the universe, the museum is divided into three levels of interactive displays; The Past, The Present and The Future. Taking in everything from archaeology to space travel, the centre first urges children to dig through ‘The Past’ on the lower level, offering displays on archaeology, geology and paleontology. The Present provides an introduction to the natural environment and urban planning that includes hands-on activities, while the top floor presents The Future. Focusing on science and space exploration, the exciting exhibits of The Future explore technology and the future of civilisation.
The building itself serves as an example to visitors of sustainable building practices. An energy-efficient building, the museum features a number of sustainable solutions including solar arrays, geothermal energy, natural lighting and LED fixtures.
The open and light filled floor plan connects the outside areas of the building seamlessly, leading the learning outdoors. A science playground and climbing wall, amphitheatre and rain garden, along with a green roof that operates as insulation for the building, are but some of the sustainable features that grace the outside of the museum and encourages further learning through interactive play.
