GRAND SKY PARK FOR SLOVAKIA

01 Jun 2017

Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled 'Sky Park', a masterplan for Bratislava in Slovakia which includes the development of a range of public facilities that encompass local historical landmarks.

Zaha Hadid Architects have unveiled plans to redevelop an industrial and derelict part of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Situated in the south-eastern part of the city, the design will convert the vast site into a new 20,000 square metre public park with residential towers that contain more than 700 apartments, office and retail space. An improved transport system will also connect the area with Bratislava’s city centre.

Sitting at the heart of the new ‘Sky Park’ is the listed Jurkovičova Teplárne heating plant, designed by architect Dušan Jurkovič and dating back to 1941; the cultural monument will be a highlight within the grounds of the project. Zaha Hadid Architects’ proposal was chosen in 2010 for its engaging and open nature that successfully incorporated the historical landmark. The architecture of the towers will embody a fluid design aesthetic that creates generous new living spaces and engaging communal areas.

The completed masterplan will develop and grow with its new community, eventually including playgrounds, an amphitheatre, picnic sites, running tracks, a sports field, a dog zone, and an orchard.

Patrik Schumacher, principal of Zaha Hadid Architects said the, “Sky Park is an important link between Bratislava’s contemporary culture, emerging nature and history.”
