STREAMBANK REHABILITATION WORKS | JACK BARKLEY PARK ON BUNDAMBA CREEK, IPSWICH
In response to the significant flood events of early 2022, Ipswich City Council engaged Australian Environmental Landscapes (AEL) to deliver critical restoration and streambank stabilisation works at Jack Barkley Park along Bundamba Creek. The project aimed to rectify flood damage, reduce sediment loss, improve flood resilience and enhance local biodiversity in a vital community greenspace.
AEL took on a comprehensive scope of environmental landscaping works, incorporating erosion control, timber stabilisation structures, revegetation and aquatic habitat enhancements. Central to the project was the installation of natural materials - including salvaged hardwood and local rock - to stabilise the bank and slow water velocity at key erosion points. These measures are designed not only to withstand future weather events but to promote the regeneration of native vegetation and support a thriving riparian ecosystem.
Habitat improvement was a major focus of the initiative. Timber features were installed both in-stream and along the bank to provide shelter and breeding environments for native fauna. Revegetation followed, with the planting of carefully selected native species based on the area’s unique regional ecosystem type and insights from local flora surveys. This approach ensures ecological compatibility and long-term sustainability.
AEL’s involvement didn’t end with the installation. The team has proudly undertaken 12 months of ongoing vegetation maintenance, including watering and targeted weed control, to give the new landscape the best possible start. They also helped facilitate a local community planting day, preparing the site and working alongside Ipswich City Council and residents to engage the public in caring for their natural environment.
As a local leader in environmental landscaping and bushland rehabilitation, AEL remains committed to delivering solutions that balance ecological health with community benefit. Its work at Jack Barkley Park is a testament to the positive outcomes that result when natural materials, expert planning, and community collaboration come together.
From flood recovery to long-term ecological resilience, AEL continues to support South East Queensland’s environment through sustainable, hands-on landscaping projects that leave a lasting impact.
