SMART SOLAR SAVES THE DAY

A smart solar solution was used to illuminate a series of rest areas to create greater safety and functionality on Queensland roads.

Spread across Southern, Central and Northern Queensland, a chain of public roadway rest areas and heavy vehicle rest stops are now well lit thanks to Orion Solar, a leading supplier of solar LED lighting systems engineered for outdoor off-grid lighting applications.

Faced with a series of rest areas situated in remote locations away from easily accessible grid-powered electricity, Queensland’s Department of Transport & Main Roads (TMR) tasked Orion Solar with supplying and delivering area lighting that would improve conditions immeasurably. Conditions included facilitating well-lit pavements that would accommodate the maneuvering and parking of heavy vehicles as well as general traffic. Ease of installation and reliable operation were also required of the solution, given the remote locations.

To meet the brief, Orion Solar chose the iSSL Maxi range. A reliable and robust standalone lighting solution, the iSSL Maxi is ideally suited to roads, carparks and industrial areas. Offering simple and economical installation in an all-in-one compact, integrated unit, this solar collection has unequalled performance and smart device capabilities.

Created by Sunna Design, the iSSL range features horizontal solar panels located on top of the luminaire, rather than as a separate unit mounted on top of the pole. It has built-in battery storage and automatic day-and-night mode controlled by a photoelectric cell. Its LED technology allows it to run at a lower illumination (25%) when not in use, which brightens to 100 percent when motion sensors detect movement. The galvanized steel light pole has a single outreach and comes with surface or inground mounting options for easy installation.

Operating from sunset to sunrise, these solar units are renowned for their dynamic and smart energy consumption, providing light year round in any type of weather. They also do more than just illuminate. The iSSL series features an array of optional extras such as smart traffic management, WiFi hotspots, street monitoring, CCTV cameras, and even advertising panels. Remote management also helps to cut down on maintenance costs.

SunnAPP smartphone software makes for easy installation and commissioning, the setting of lighting profiles, remote monitoring and data log and performance monitoring. The web management platform allows users to monitor their systems, analyse performance and make adjustments as needed without having to be on site.

The perfect solution to meet TMR’s need, Orion Solar’s selection of the iSSL Maxi series of luminaires has proven to be an effective choice to improve the visibility and safety needs of some of Queensland’s most remote rest stops.
