01 Apr 2010
Robert Stanton has been announced as the new President/Chairman of the Landscape Contractors' Association of NSW & ACT (LCA). Previously a Board Member, Robert will assume his new role May 2010, and plans to stregthen the association's membership base.
One-on-one with the new President/Chairman of the LCA, Robert Stanton.
When were you appointed President of the LCA? What role did you occupy prior to this?
I will be assuming the role of President/Chairman of the LCA as of May 2010. Prior to this I occupied a position on the Board and in the early 1990s I held the position as Treasurer.
How did you get into the landscape industry?
I started in the industry as an apprentice at the age of 17 and went on to become a foreman for the company I currently work for – Regal Gardens (then known as Regal Landscapes Pty Ltd). The company was originally involved in domestic landscaping and in 1983 moved into the commercial market completing projects such as Woolloomooll, Street Closures, Darling Harbour Recreational precinct and numerous projects for the Sydney Olympic Authority.
Can you tell us a bit about your background - education/employment?
I have been involved in the landscaping and building industry for 33 years and have diversified into the hospitality industry, hotel industry and retirement development industry.
What is the aim of the LCA?
The aim of the LCA is to develop the industry; and collectively work together to create a better image, understanding and accessibility to education within the industry, which I believe we have achieved over the 30 years the LCA has been established. Standards and quality of work have been set, which is not only individually creative but unique world-wide. Our reputation for quality and the ability to be able to utilise raw materials is acknowledged.
What are your plans (both short-term and long-term) for the association?
The LCA will concentrate over the next two years on strengthening its membership numbers including incorporating affiliate members and industries.
Sponsorship and support will be secured and long term sponsors and supporters will be acknowledged for their involvement with the association. We are aware that without the backing of sponsors, without loyalty and without the support of our members the LCA would not survive. Therefore, we will collectively combine all parties to network together to create a positive outcome for the future.
The most important thing for the LCA future now is to concentrate on growing their membership base, securing sponsorship by networking and delivering a benefit; and to refine and crystalise the 30 years of hard work and effort that previous contractors have established. This will then be passed onto the younger members who I believe have a great future and input.
What has been your career highlight to date?
The highlight of my career to date would have to be the Darling Harbour Project as it elevated me to a senior professional landscape contractor, and opened doors for prestigious projects for many years to come.
