PINCH POINT

Street + Garden was engaged by the SC Regional Council to develop a number of elements for Alexandra Headland on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The brief for this project was to design a sculptural seating element along the beachside boardwalk that would be a focal point, while also harmoniously fitting into the foreshore landscape.

CONSIDERATIONS

While having an obvious function, the design took direct inspiration from its coastal location, reflecting many aspects of this environment and lifestyle. The overall form, the shaping details in the timber and the curved metal framework are all references to aspects of the ocean. The form also allows for individual and communal use of the seat.

Manufactured from HDG mild steel and hardwood timber, the material palette takes into careful consideration the harsh nature of the coastal environment, both in terms of longevity and maintenance. Building on the experience of these production methods, the design also takes into consideration the environmental impact and aims to reduce the amount of material used wherever possible.

OPPORTUNITIES

In keeping with the project location, the hardwood timber slats were produced to have a more organic shaping. However, as these were fabricated using CNC technology, all of the parts can be easily reproduced if they need replacing. The principles of this 'Wave' design have since been applied to a number of other coastal and urban locations.
