A FRESH IDEA

Conceived as a locally distinctive and globally iconic destination, Woods Bagot has revealed its concept design for a $400 million redevelopment of the Adelaide Central Market Arcade. The project will develop the prominent space into a mixed-use modern hub for South Australia’s capital, and will connect the arcade to the Adelaide Central Market – one of the largest and most popular undercover fresh produce markets in the world.
The new development will transform the Arcade, which has been a beloved local spot for 150 years, into two levels of specialty retail, food and beverage, a central public hall, public rooftop gardens, education spaces, hotel, apartments and offices.
The design proposed by Woods Bagot will see the reconstruction of the once-iconic arches of the former Grote Street façade, which were partially demolished in the 60s, and will introduce a new social and commercial complex to the local public. Biodiverse roof terraces will provide a green hub for lifestyle and hospitality and will add a sustainability factor to the precinct.
The existing public carpark will connect over the market with 260 new spaces added to provide relief to the overloaded space.
“Our design team has a local connection to this project,” explained Woods Bagot associate principal and the project’s design leader, Alex Hall. “We live here and visit the market regularly. This is an opportunity we meet with pride, sensitivity and a genuine desire to shape and evolve our city for the better.
“As part of a broader vision to attract the best and brightest people, the city’s intent is to transform the market precinct into one of Australia’s most recognised lifestyle destinations,” added Hall. “Woods Bagot proposes to capture the spirit of the market in the arcade redevelopment. The design for the new arcade will seamlessly integrate with the existing Adelaide Central Market, which is being left untouched, by creating a continuous connection between the two neighbours.’
Woods Bagot is in the process of creating a more detailed design in liaison with stakeholders, the City of Adelaide and ICD Property Developer in order to create a firm blueprint for what is required.
“The Adelaide Central Market Arcade has been a prominent community space for 150 years,” said ICD property managing director, Matthew Khoo. “What we intend to do is enhance the existing structure by restoring and protecting heritage items and building complementary new assets that will become new amenities for the community to enjoy.”
Construction is set to break ground in 2021.
