The centre will also include a six-bed short stay unit, a ground floor assessment unit, physical therapies suite, acute adult inpatient services, including capacity to manage mothers and babies in a defined pod, a high dependency unit, as well as seven beds dedicated for research, putting the centre at the forefront of international best practice in psychiatric care.
The purpose-built centre provides a contemporary, warm environment featuring beautiful wall murals, a roof top garden, barbecue and break out areas for staff, patients and visitors.
In a hospital, particularly one dealing with patients that can be unpredictable, OH&S issues are paramount and Christie CCQ cooktops were chosen for the five barbecue stations because of their unmatched health and safety features.
The architects also wanted to ensure that these barbecue stations blended harmoniously with the positive feel of the architecture, while still meeting Christie’s high installation safety standards. This was achieved by employing the legendary Christie BWB Installation Kits in a new way.
BWB kits were developed by Christie back in the seventies and feature a stainless steel benchtop with fixed stainless steel legs that guide the construction of a brickwork BBQ structure underneath the bench.
The RPA architects took that BWB form and covered the barbecues in the same Vitrapanel cladding that was used on the Centre’s walls. This ensured the barbecues would merge seamlessly with the building itself. The result was a series of outdoor cooking zones that were safe, contemporary and robust enough to cope with a heavy workload. Zones that offered staff, patients and visitors a place to relax and enjoy an experience not usually found in a hospital.
