MIRACLE 4000 – STADIUM TO STADIUM

16 Sep 2012

From a bucket list to reality: how one idea has turned into raising money for a great charity supporting families of premature and sick born babies.

Many years ago Graeme Logan set himself a challenge to one day cycle from Perth to Sydney. After reaching his 50th birthday, he decided it was time to make this bucket list item a reality. Graeme is the Arenas Manager at ANZ Stadium and has always prided himself on keeping fit and healthy. He has spent many months and early morning starts racking up the hours on his bike to be ready for this ride.

The challenges Graeme faces everyday maintaining a pristine turf surface at ANZ Stadium with sporting events and concerts will seem like a walk in the park compared to the 4000km of rugged roads across our great country. Averaging 150 km a day over 4 weeks – this is one massive challenge!

Graeme managed to find 2 other guys from the Sports Turf Industry who were mad enough to join him on this journey.

Mark Crawford, Turf Management teacher at Kurri Kurri TAFE and Peter Brown from Koppman Golf Constructions are also making the trek across the country. Dave May and Graeme Colless of Dad & Dave’s Turf are the support crew and drive the caravan and set up camp along the way.

On top of this amazing challenge, and because they are good blokes, they will be fundraising along the way for the Miracle Babies Foundation, a great charity supporting families of premature and sick born babies.

The guys left the WACA in Perth on Monday, 27th August and plan to arrive back at ANZ Stadium, Homebush, on 22nd September.

After 2 weeks of long, hard days on their bikes, the Miracle 4000 riders have finally reached the half way mark. They have travelled 2000km from Perth, crossed the Nullabor, battled strong winds and are very sore with tired bodies.

Most days start with the same routine: up at 5.30am for breakfast and preparation of bikes and bodies (lots of barrier cream, supplements and pain killers). On the road by 6.30am, they’re lucky if they stop at a roadhouse for a coffee and something to eat.

Everyone is encouraged to dig deep to support the guys and help fundraise for Miracle Babies. Fundraising is going well but they need more support and we encourage everyone to get behind the guys and donate.

Donations can be made at www.miraclebabiesfundraising.org.au/miracle4000 or through STA NSW – info@sportsturf.asn.au
