FLOATING CITY BEACH
11 Jun 2014
A floating City Beach providing a flexible and dynamic public space has been unveiled for New York โ the first of its kind for the city.
Plans have been revealed for a floating sand beach to be constructed along the Hudson River in central New York.
Callled 'City Beach NYC', the scheme is positioned on a reclaimed barge with a self-contained beach that would be the first of its kind for the city, providing a flexible and dynamic public space.
Conceived by Blayne Ross, of Workshop/APD and Craft Engineering Studio, the development also offers a mix of retail outlets and dining facilities at first floor level with a marine science exhibit located below.
In order to offer free entry to all users, the project will be financially supported by on-site amenities, rentals and naming rights.
“Having a white-sand beach located on the banks of the Hudson River gives access to a favourite summer location without requiring travel to outer boroughs,” explained designer Blayne Ross.
"It’s an exciting time for our waterways in New York. With projects like this, we have the opportunity to create a space that enhances the summer experience in Manhattan and supports the city and state waterfront revitalisation initiative, improving the quality of life for our residents."
