A recent upgrade of the lighting requirements at Edith Cowan University (ECU) has improved the overall ambience and aesthetics, while at the same time ensuring energy efficiency and environmental benefits.

ECU is a large multi-campus institution serving communities in Western Australia and a significant cohort of international students. ECU’s Joondalup Campus, which is made up of a number of buildings, recently went through an upgrade. As a part of this, the lighting was enhanced to help create an aesthetically pleasing environment, while saving energy and reducing maintenance costs.

The project to update the lighting around ECU was easily achieved with the help of Thorn Lighting, a highly-recognised global brand for professional indoor and outdoor lighting. Looking at the criteria of ECU, Thorn’s extensive range of quality products was an ideal choice.

The project consisted of Thorn’s Adelie, a stylish 36W indirect LED lantern, which replaced existing opal spheres 125W mercury vapour fittings. The Adelie fitting was chosen for its unique aesthetics and excellent energy efficiency.

The project also utilised over 50 of Thorn Lighting’s Street LED luminaries, with a combination of 112W and 168W versions used to replace the existing 250W fittings. The Street LED was prefect for this lighting solution as it boasts great energy efficiency and delivers a long life of 50,000 hours, which further increases the saving in maintenance costs whilst complying with relevant standards.

Thorn’s Amazon 28W wall luminaire is a striking fitting, created by twin structural bridges between the elements of the cast aluminium bezel. It was chosen to add ambiance to the University, and has many other added benefits such as ease of maintenance and energy efficiency through the use of HF control gear which replaced the existing 36W bulkheads.

Through the use of quality, smart and energy efficient products, ECU was able to create a welcoming and friendly environment, whilst saving energy and reducing the cost of maintenance.

Furthermore, by utilising its PEC Philosophy - Performance, Efficiency and Comfort – Thorn Lighting was able to deliver the right lighting levels at the right place and at the right time.
