WATERFRONT PLAYGROUND | DARWIN NT
Awarded the 2018 Kidsafe National Playspace Design Award: Public Playscapes Category A <$500K, this ‘seafront’ playground featuring Proludic play equipment is a custom rope structure inspired by the sea and designed for young children aged 1-8 years of age.
Commissioned by Darwin Waterfront Corportion, Proludic’s NT distributor NT Sports and Playground Surfacing provided a playground that would sit easily in the unique seaside precinct, meeting the client’s brief for an “innovative concept for a playground that complements the high amenity and vibrant lifestyle at the precinct”.
Proludic designed the playground, and designed and manufactured the innovative play equipment, which includes a customised rope play course and boardwalk, slide, tunnels, climbing wall, inclusive swing and a seaweed inspired balance trail.
The custom play area is based on the concept of the “relationship between the maritime world and children”. In this space children are immersed in a 3-dimensional play environment with rope games mounted on undulating shapes, multi-seat pods and a wide slide, allowing them to slide, climb, crawl and swing their way around just like they were braving the waters of a rough sea.
Structural elements of the playground are used for subtle lighting at night, ensuring an artistic feel, and the Pontoon Trail forms a dune-like structure whose undulating shape creates dynamism in the playspace.
A world first playground, the Darwin Waterfront Corporation was very pleased with the outcome. General Manger Samuel Burke said, “The play equipment caters for children between two to eight years of age and provides another offer for parents of young children to enjoy when they come to the Darwin Waterfront. We expect that it will extend the length of stay for our existing visitors and hopefully attract more families to this iconic Darwin precinct.”
