ASTONBROOK ESTATE REGENERATION

by Evolve Environmental Solutions

By far the largest job undertaken by Evolve Environmental Solutions since its inception, Astonbrook Estate involves a substantial weed management and revegetation program to be undertaken over a five-year period.

The rehabilitation site was originally part of a dilapidated hobby farm on the banks of Spring Creek, after falling into disuse, mature Camphor Laurel trees and Cats Claw vine infested the Spring Creek corridor. Once removed, the introduction of over 40,000 endemic trees, grass and shrub species has returned the creek corridor to its former glory.

The VMP ensured the eradication of these weed species whilst not disturbing the colony of rainbow fish living in the upper sections of the creek.  Sediment control was essential and the clearing of the area was completed by hand to minimise the impact of the project on the natural environment. Particular consideration was paid to the safety of the area’s rainbow fish, they are very sensitive to light and any increase in water temperature.

Once the weed removal was completed, the restored habitat now safely houses rare native fish species, wallabies and birds only 15 minutes from the Brisbane CBD. Evolve has worked closely with Wolter Consulting, Form Landscape Architects and various departments of the BCC to ensure delivery of this project on time and on budget. This project won the 2016 Landscape QLD Ecological Rehabilitation Award after previously winning the 2015 QLD UDIA Environmental Award
