A huge, multi-faceted proposal has won the opportunity to completely overhaul Busan North Port in South Korea. In an effort to capitalise on the city’s panoramic harbour side, the new design re-unites the bustling city, once a small port town – now the second largest city in South Korea, with the relaxing seaside.

Featuring a series of promenades, what better way to spend an afternoon ‘come evening following a stressful day at work, than wandering through miniature gardens, sandy beach facades and natural meadows?

Interspersed with greenery and natural landscaping, the plans also include open spaces for performances, an observatory as well as multiple sites for marketplaces and cafes alike, intended to encourage and invigorate crowds.

The new, ‘Interactive Pier’ combines the past with the present. As well as forging a platform for social interaction, there will also be historical and educational aspects, as a sign of respect and a way to pay homage to the past. There will be a memorial with a 6-part exhibition, large scale ship sculptures and the old quay wall will be preserved.

Despite a number of complexities due to the location of the site, a city verging on mountain terrain, the seaside and a river, SYNWHA Consortium have seamlessly united a breathtaking natural environment with the cool infrastructure of a rapidly growing city.
