Root Barrier™ has been involved in the development of root barriers, their construction and applications since 1992 when technology allowed us to move from concrete barriers which cracked and failed to protect the roots, to special plastics with the capacity to handle the stresses and loads created by matric suction, soil and moisture movement.
When we started to develop this product we thought that we were stopping trees from affecting buildings and as the research evolved, we discovered that what we were actually doing was stabilising moisture in reactive clay. A flexible waterproof cut-off wall placed around the building will allow the building foundations to float on a block of stable clay and moisture, reducing the need for the use of piers and becomes very economical. Root Barrier™ is also used for the protection of infrastructure and the stabilisation of reactive clay under roads.
Our latest product is a pipe wrap which provides a root free insulation zone around services and conduits. The target market for this is the developers and civil construction companies who have to warrant their developments for several years to the local council. The designers place the services under the median strip and then plant street trees on top. Until now, we could not get a good result using vertical root barriers as the tree roots follow the services trench along. The pipe wrap moves the roots away from the pipe and provides an insulation layer between the services and the roots.
