IT’S A PEARLER!
10 Aug 2016
The Pearl - a mixed-used development planned for Istanbul – centres around a series of man-made islands that will form a lush marina oasis and public space cleverly protected from the elements.
Designed by Forum Studio, The Pearl of Instanbul development is an ambitious project comprising a huge 154, 220sqm and will include a series of sculptural towers rising from a podium that steps down to the water like natural plateaus and will create public spaces, restaurants, cafes and retail areas for residents and tourists.
Set on a natural bluff overlooking the Marmara Sea, the Pearl is set to become the new cultural and retail center for the city of Istanbul. Featuring both residential and commercial buildings, the development will surround a new marina resulting from the construction of a series of man-made islands. The string of islands will be set up to accommodation up to 500 yachts, as well as a cruise ship dock, and will double as a seawall, ensuring calm waters inside the marina while reducing the environmental impact on marine habitats.
“The islands that shelter a tranquil marina resemble a string of pearls; a cascade of terraces on land is an homage to a shell’s undulating ridges,” the architects explain.
The protected marina area will host a variety of activities including an active nightlife, as well as entertainments, water sports and family activities. Marine research facilities will also be incorporated into the area.
The residential towers will be placed so as to maximise the panoramic landscape, with each unit positioned to receive maximum natural light and uninterrupted views. The range of residential options of offer will include everything from reasonably priced hotel rooms to luxury condos. This is expected to create access for a diverse mix of people to the complex and facilities, thereby ensuring a reputation as a significant cultural landmark.
In discussing the cultural significance of the project, Forum Studio states: “The Pearl of Istanbul is at the heart of this transformation [of the city]. Envisioned by Turkey’s business and civic leaders, and designed by the urban planning and architectural design team at Forum Studio, the Pearl marks Istanbul’s rebirth as a global destination.”
Construction is expected to be completed by July 2023.
