CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
15 Jul 2016
The NSW chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects announced the winners of the 2016 Landscape Architecture Awards last night at a Gala Event in Sydney.
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ (AILA) New South Wales Landscape Architecture Awards 2016 (NSW) have been announced, celebrating the very best of the state’s open, public and green spaces. The annual awards recognise the leadership and innovation in landscape architecture projects that enrich the environments we inhabit and enhance the state’s liveability, economic development and global profile.
The prestigious awards were granted to projects promoting transformational design and green infrastructure excellence to politically challenging projects of scale and complexity. Over forty projects entered the NSW awards, with 15 winners crowned across categories including civic landscape, communities, cultural heritage, gardens, parks and open spaces as well as urban design.
Some of the winning projects included the Sydney Park Water reuse project, an exemplar piece of green infrastructure enabling urban wastewater to be harvested and reused within the park and beyond.
The project is a seamless intersection of design, art and science; an outcome only achieved by the devoted collaboration between those involved. It is the next stage of a significant urban renewal plan that has been positively conceived and executed, intertwining the needs of community, sustainability and infrastructure to form an educational and enjoyable green place.
The Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan project was also awarded for setting a new benchmark on delivering an engaging place-based and community approach to revitalisation of regional town centres, as well as Fairwater Park, a recipient of NSW’s first six star communities rating from the Green Building Council of Australia for its use of geothermal heating and cooling as well as its restrained approach to urban waterway design.
As urban densification rises, leading to increased pollution rates, potential health risks and urban heat islands, the importance of complimenting both building architecture and existing landscape is vital for the future resilience of our cities. This year’s awards saw transformational and broad scale designs that create vibrant, sustainable and connected communities across New South Wales. “Many of the entries demonstrated best practice and complex thinking at every scale, with good team collaboration across public and private practice,” commented the expert Jury.
The NSW’s State Landscape Architecture Awards 2016 took place at a sit down dinner reception on Thursday July 14 at IVY Ballroom in the presence of industry heavyweights.
The projects that received an Award of Excellence and a Landscape Architecture Award at the state level proceed to the national awards, taking place later in the year, where one project will be awarded the best landscape architecture project in Australia.
