Like many councils, Hurstville city council in NSW proactively seeks to use sustainable resources for its asset management and procurement projects.
So it came as no surprise that recycled-plastic Enduroplank™ decking stood out as the perfect material to use when it came to rejuvenating a 200 metre boardwalk through the Riverwood Wetlands.
Mayor of Hurstville, CR Con Hindi, said “the use of plastic boards are more durable than timber, they do not splinter and have the advantage of being rot and pest resistant and are much better suited to the harsh, salt water environment around the mangroves”.
According to the Mayor "by opting to replace the boardwalk with recycled plastic boards, Council has delivered environmental benefits coupled with cost savings over the life expectancy of the boardwalk, which exceeds 40 years".
Instead of needing constant maintenance, this boardwalk is now an asset for the council and for the many visitors who enjoy the use of this popular recreational area.
The project has recycled the equivalent of 3 million plastic packaging bags.
