Beachside beauty

A project that combines construction expertise with environmental responsibility

Murrays Beach, situated on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie, has much to offer. There is the Pacific Ocean, Wallarah National Park and Stockland’s impressive Wallarah residential estate development.

At the heart of this development is a strong philosophy of environmental responsibility and sustainability, which is clearly reflected in the landscape design and construction. Landscape architects thoroughly researched the site’s flora and fauna before producing a landscape plan which included provision for pedestrian and cycle paths around the foreshore, together with picnic and playground facilities to ensure a blending of public, community and residential spaces.

Landscape contractors, The Gardenmakers, were responsible for a broad scope of work which included the construction and installation of timber boardwalks and structures around the foreshore reserve and village green, timber decks and viewing platforms, a timber bridge and performance platform plus picnic shelters, barbecues, tables and benches.

The Gardenmakers were also responsible for the construction of the entire playground, stone work to the amenities block, stone flagging around a display house, rural fencing to separate allotments, concrete works (which included pathways to the sales office and amenities block), turfing and planting of native species.

The project was constructed in stages over an 18-month period, starting with the village green and followed by the construction of the playground and surrounds. So impressed were the judges of The Landscape Contractors’ Association of NSW Ltd 2008 Awards of Excellence that they not only chose it as the winning project in the Recreational category, they also judged it to be Commercial Construction of the Year.
