Association Profile
As the peak body for the nursery and garden industry in Australia, the Nursery & Garden Industry Australia (NGIA) is responsible for overseeing the national development of the industry. This includes:
• Liaising with the federal government departments and authorities on relevant industry issues
• Working with Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) to determine industry marketing and research & development
initiatives as well as levy funding priorities
• Providing strategic direction and leadership to the industry
• Ensuring communication of relevant industry information
• Working with the state and territory Nursery & Garden Industries (NGIs) to ensure unity, strength
and synergy
NGIA and the state and territory NGIs represent all sectors of the industry including producers, wholesalers, retailers, allied traders and consultants. Our vision is for a unified Australian nursery and garden industry that is productive, profitable and sustainable. A copy of the Industry Strategic Plan can be obtained from NGIA offices.
Building Better Businesses
The Nursery & Garden Industry will implement the objectives of the Industry Strategic Plan 2010-2015, which includes:
1. Markets: Increase the sales value of greenlife products and services through marketing and promotion
2. Capacity: Enhance the capacity and efficiency of the industry's resources through upgrading industry skills, knowledge and practice
3. Communication: Build industry support through shaping government, public and related industry understanding of the industry's benefits, and enhance these benefits through communications
4. Innovation: Invest in greenlife product/service developments to enable the industry to respond to growth opportunities and challenges
5. Governance: Support the industry through services and resources that enhance the capacity to respond to issues, capture opportunities and achieve the vision of the Strategic Plan
Accreditation and Professional Development
The industry continues to lead the way in driving best practice outcomes through two high quality accreditation programs and recognising the importance of continued professional development
• Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) for growers and growing media suppliers;
• Australian Garden Centre Accreditation Scheme (AGCAS) for retailers has been reviewed and made more appealing
• The Certified Nursery Professional (CNP) program is the industry's professional recognition scheme for individuals.
CNP members are acknowledged for their skill and expertise within the nursery and garden industry.
Member Benefits
A range of valuable member benefits are available through the State Associations, including national and state services which include technical and industrial relations advice; state and national websites; industry association journals and newsletters and representation at exhibitions and trade fairs.
Government Relations
NGIA represents its members and the industry at a Federal level in a wide range of matters that affect the nursery and garden industry including:
• Biosecurity incursions
• Chemical registration and use
• Quarantine at both import and export
• Representation and industry submissions
• Climate change and the role of plants in the environment
• Acts as a co-ordinating body for any issues that require an industry-wide position
