Australian Institute of Landscape Designers & Managers (AILDM)

The Australian Institute of Landscape Designers and Managers Ltd (AILDM) is a national association serving landscape designers, landscape managers and other associated landscape professionals. The Institute is managed by a biennially-elected National Council.

Members are landscape designers, landscape architects, landscape managers, contractors, project managers, consultants, town planners, maintenance contractors and journalists. A number are specialists in fields such as bush regeneration, heritage planning, playground design, arboriculture, irrigation and environmental conservation. Membership of AILDM is now being used as an automatic credential for eligibility for the submission of landscape plans with development applications by an increasing number of councils.

AILDM is engaged in encouraging professional practice in landscape design and management among its members. Also, the Institute seeks to enhance the professional standing of members among the broader horticulture, landscape and building industries, as well as the general public. Additionally, AILDM promotes the benefits of using professional landscape designers through its involvement in magazines and garden show activities. One of the strengths of AILDM members is their horticultural knowledge, which combines well with their understanding of structural landscaping requirements.

For the growing membership, AILDM offers the opportunity to network with fellow professionals, enhance business practice through further education and access a range of services including insurance, marketing opportunities, seminars and informal 'get-togethers'. AILDM's Continuing Professional Development Program provides members with opportunities to increase their skills and knowledge to stay at the forefront of the industry. Our quarterly journal, Landscape Outlook, provides educational articles, industry and institute news, product and plant information and book and garden event reviews to members and a wide range of subscribers. AILDM members are also kept informed on industry events and developments through its website and a monthly e-newsletter.

An AILDM Landscape Design Award competition is held annually and is an excellent showcase for the outstanding quality of entrants' work from around Australia. AILDM also provides opportunities for landscape design students and recent graduates to participate in design competitions.

A Diploma specialising in Landscape Design is the basic qualification for membership, but landscape designers with other similar tertiary qualifications or extensive industry experience are encouraged to apply. Allied industry professionals may obtain affiliate membership, while those studying can join as student members, and if you have recently graduated there is the recent graduate membership.
