NEW & IMPROVED

Redfern Park, NSW

A state-of-the-art sporting facility and a revamped streetscape give the Sydney suburb of Redfern a new lease on life

The construction of a new training facility at Redfern Park and the upgrade of the surrounding streetscape have transformed the Sydney suburb of Redfern and created a new and exciting sports destination. The Commercial Landscape Contractor on the project was Co-ordinated Landscapes. The project was completed in May 2008, with maintenance ending in December of that year.

The project had two distinct parts: the refurbishment of the Heritage protected Victorian Redfern Park and the total replacement of the dilapidated Redfern Oval.

The refurbishment of Redfern Park included removal of existing park infrastructure whilst maintaining and protecting the numerous heritage items and existing mature trees.

The replacement of Redfern Oval included a new contemporary grandstand with change rooms, SSFC training facilities (gym, physio room, foyer space and media room), game-day rooms (home-and-away change facilities, referees room, medical room and match office room), a cafe, public toilets and a maintenance office.

The oval has been replaced with a sunken rectangular Loksand Sports pitch, constructed on US Golf Association Guidelines. Both the pitch and surrounding turf seating terraces were enhanced and stabilised by the use of Loksand and Legend Couch.

The landscape works extending throughout the park included the transplantation and relocation of existing and new palm trees, new garden beds, installation of an interactive children's water feature, additional precast seating and table settings, installation of sandstone walls and construction of new pathways.

Works within the 120-year-old Historic Park reinforced the original formal Redial design and comprised new sandstone entries, pathways, edging, seating, turf, garden beds and a unique play area.

“Conservation and protection of the existing trees and heritage items was paramount,” says Carl Small from Co-Ordinated Landscapes. Refurbishment of the Heritage items located within the park included the Baptist fountain, the Baffors cannon, the ANZAC memorial and the entry gates.

The seats and tables were bespoke as they were all precast concrete with timber slats added for user comfort.

The adjacent streetscapes were also upgraded with new sandstone boundary walls, fences, bluestone kerbs and footpaths. The result is a new and exciting sports destination and a fresh, revamped streetscape for Redfern.
