Fresh Fairy Hedge
1 August 2010
Hedging plants easily slip into the 'same-old, same-old' category. They need to be tough and reliably evergreen - no wonder we depend on a handful of dull standbys. (Who could honestly call pittosporum and photinia... gorgeous?)
Then there is Fairy™ Magnolia BLUSH: fast, green, with flowers and fragrance to boot. In late winter and early spring it covers itself in blossom (traditionally a tricky time for garden display), and follows this with a sprinkling of flowers in summer and sometimes in autumn too.
Fairy™ Magnolia BLUSH is a new hybrid of Michelia bred in New Zealand by world renowned Magnolia Breeder Mark Jury. It grows quickly, forms an upright, dark green evergreen hedge (3 x 4m high by 2.5 x 3m wide), and produces a smothering of blushed lilac-pink single magnolia-like flowers which slowly shift to pearly white.
Like all Anthony Tesselaar plants, Fairy™ Magnolia BLUSH has been run though the hoops to make sure it’s a breeze to grow anywhere in Australia (except in boggy soil). From full sun through to part shade, down to a chilly one degree celsius, it isn’t bothered by pests or diseases and once established with moderate watering, its water needs become even more modest.
