Originally named ‘Lapis Tiburtinus’ (meaning Tibur stone), with the name gradually corrupted to travertine, this stone has been used as building materials since the days of the ancient Romans who mined deposits of travertine for building temples, aqueducts, monuments, bath complexes, and amphitheatres.
